Known as the Florence of the North or the German Rome Salzburg is a real art lover’s dream – make a beeline for the Modern Art Museum, the Museum of Natural History and the Residence Gallery. And for music lovers, Mozart’s birth house and his place of residence are both open to the public. For the best views in the city, it’s well worth making the climb up to Hohensalzburg Fortress to gaze out over the Alps – and concerts are held here regularly too.

Driving Around Salzburg

Salzburg is well connected to both Vienna and Munich via the autobahns A8 (Munich - Salzburg) and A1 (Salzburg - Vienna). Be aware that there is an Austrian Motorway ""Vignette"" you have to purchase to drive on the motorways, with the price varying depending on whether you buy a yearly or 10 day vignette. As the city is so compact, Salzburg can be a tight squeeze for the unfamiliar driver, with tiny old street signs not helping any. But with a good Sat Nav you’ll be fine, although you may prefer to park in the city centre and explore more freely on foot. Also, if you’re travelling in winter, be prepared to encounter some snow!
