There can be few pleasures greater than idling along the Rambla, which runs parallel to the river. The concourse is potted with cafes and tourist-friendly restaurants, and the new town on the west bank has yet more shopping and hotels, and a few more restaurants for the budget-conscious traveller. A mass exodus of locals during August – especially on the weekend – will please tourists looking for a quiet weekend of exploration and decent dining.

The cathedral is a particular point of interest, as it has the widest Gothic nave in all of Europe.
