Treviso is often overlooked in favour of the famous and historic city of Venice nearby, but it has some exquisite buildings and waterside vistas in its own right, and offers the additional benefit of being less crowded and a cheaper place to stay than its sister city. Capital of the province of Treviso, it has an older walled city with the majority of the population now living outside the historic walls. Much of the medieval town was destroyed in bombing in the Second World War, but restored after the end of the war. There is a thriving commercial centre, and the headquarters of retailer Benetton and the appliance manufacturer De’Longhi are both based in Treviso. The city claims to be at the heart of the original production area of Prosecco wine, as well as boasting the invention of the Italian desert now served in almost every restaurant, Italian or otherwise – Tiramisu.
Things to Do in Treviso
Of the many historic churches to visit in the city, probably the most outstanding are the Church of San Francesco, built by the Franciscans in the 13th century with some of the original frescoes and wall paintings are still to be seen; and the exquisite medieval Church of Santa Lucia. The Piazza dei Signori in the centre of the old town is a great place to watch the world go by whilst enjoying a coffee in one of the local cafes, sitting in one of the Piazza’s historic arcades.

I Buranelli is sometimes known as the “little Venice” of Treviso, a picturesque area with colour-washed houses rising out of the canal, and wrought-iron bridges crossing from one narrow alleyway to another. The historic walls of Treviso, restored a few years ago and studded with great trees, are wonderful places to stroll on a summer’s evening and to view the old city below. If you are staying in Treviso, it would be almost impossible not to visit Venice, and a day trip is easily planned, and if you have arranged car hire the drive is just 35 miles to the lagoon. Castelfranco Veneto, Padua, and Cittadella are possible to visit in a day trip, making Treviso the ideal base from which to explore the area.
