Things to Do in Pisa
No trip to Pisa would be complete without a visit to its stunning Leaning Tower. The 55.86 m high tower was completed in 1372, and leaned even then. It’s actually the bell tower for the Pisa Duomo (cathedral) and is third oldest structure in Pisa’s Cathedral Square. The older cathedral and baptistry themselves are often overlooked, but are well worth a visit in their own right.

The Museo di San Matteo on Piazza San Matteo is another overlooked gem – a marvellous museum and art gallery that’s home to must of the original artwork from Pisa’s churches. If you’re looking to escape the Tuscan summertime, you’ll also find a welcome escape at the ‘Orto Botanico’ (Botanical Garden), which was the first university garden in Europe, established in 1544.
Drive Around Pisa
Car hire is easy to find at Pisa International Airport, as well as within the city itself. Pisa is one of the easiest Italian cities to reach from its airport, which is ocated just 1km away. While Pisa’s city centre is quite compact, and most sites can easily be explored on foot, having your own transport gives you the freedom to explore the coastal stretches to either side of the city, as well as to head on out and explore the glorious Tuscan countryside. Head 20 minutes along the coast to Livorno for ferries to Elba, Sardinia and Corsica, soak up centuries’ worth of art and architecture (and some wonderful designer shopping) in Florence – just 45 minutes away, and try the tranquil beaches and boulevards of Viareggio (30 minutes) for a seaside treat.
